Executive Director Innovation Practice Institute
Pittsburgh, PA
Stephanie Dangel is Executive Director of Pitt Law School’s Innovation Practice Institute (IPI) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law (Pitt Law), which trains law students to work with and to be innovators and entrepreneurs, with a special emphasis on social entrepreneurs. Stephanie joined the IPI in 2013 after a successful career as a practicing lawyer, documentary filmmaker, and social entrepreneur. She graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale Law School, and Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Early in her legal career, Stephanie had the honor of clerking for Justice Harry Blackmun of the United States Supreme Court. Stephanie also practiced law as an Associate in the Pittsburgh office of K&L Gates. Stephanie then pursued an interest in social entrepreneurship and entertainment, which resulted in her producing two documentaries and holding leadership positions at the Steeltown Entertainment Project, a Pittsburgh-based social enterprise. Drawing on this diverse background, Stephanie developed and teaches a course on “Law, Entertainment & Social Enterprise.” With Pitt Law Professor Mike Madison, Stephanie has published and presented papers on law and social entrepreneurship, including the UMKC Law Review article, “Innovators, Esq.: Training the Next Generation of Lawyer Social Entrepreneurs,” and presentations for Ashoka, the world’s largest network of social entrepreneurs, which was founded by lawyer social entrepreneur Bill Drayton.
