Jan Necessary

Deputy District Attorney
Janet R. Necessary received a B.A. degree in 1975 from Chatham College (French and Economics) and a J.D. in 1978 from the Vanderbilt University School of Law. She joined the Allegheny County Office of the District Attorney in December 1978. Ms. Necessary is a Deputy District Attorney and supervisor of the Crimes Against Persons Unit, which prosecutes cases of adult sexual assault and other violent crimes, the Elder Abuse Unit, which prosecutes crimes against the elderly, and the Child Abuse Unit, which prosecutes sexual and physical abuse of children. She has also supervised the Violent Crimes/Firearms, Narcotics, Theft and General Trial Units. She currently prosecutes sex assault cases, homicide and robbery cases and has also prosecuted fraud and violent crimes against the elderly. She is the author of
DUI - A Manual for Pennsylvania Prosecutors, initially published by the Allegheny County District Attorney, later published by the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Institute and distributed to all Pennsylvania District Attorneys. Ms. Necessary has served on the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Medical Legal Advisory Board on Child Abuse and was a founding member of the Sexual Assault Response Team of Allegheny County (SARTAC). She has also served on the Allegheny County Domestic Violence Task Force, the Allegheny County Child Sexual Abuse Task Force, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Task Force on Family Violence.
